The classic form, built to whatever standard you need.

Closed string is the most common staircase style in the country and for good reason. The string, the structural board that runs the length of the staircase, fully encloses the treads and risers, hiding the joinery and creating a clean, simple profile that works in almost any home.

Simplicity, though, doesn't mean limited. The same closed string form can be entirely practical for a loft conversion or back staircase, or elevated with the right timber, finish and balustrade into the kind of grand entrance hall staircase that defines a home. The structure stays the same; what you build on top of it is entirely up to you.

A Foundation for Almost Anything

Because the closed string form is so adaptable, it's the staircase we're most often asked to dress up rather than design from scratch. Glass, metal or timber balustrading, curtail feature steps, a continuous handrail, almost every other style on this page can be built on top of a closed string.
