Where the joinery becomes part of the design.

A cut string staircase exposes the face string, the side the balustrade sits on, so the shape of each tread and riser becomes part of the visible profile, rather than hidden behind a flat board. It's a more demanding cut for our joiners, but it gives a staircase a level of detail a closed string simply can't.

Traditionally, a cut string is finished with patterned riser brackets underneath each tread, we offer a number of our own designs, from ornate to understated. A more contemporary cut string strips this back to a simple bracket, or none at all, for a smooth, uninterrupted face string. Either way, spindles fix down into the tread itself rather than into a baserail, and glass can be cut to follow the staircase's profile exactly, or sealed cleanly between two strings.

The same cut string structure can read as period or modern depending on the brackets, balustrade and finish you choose. It's one of the more flexible styles on this page, the cut does the hard work; the rest is down to taste.
